Overview

Delhi offers the most convenient flight gateway to Bhutan of any Indian city. Druk Air (Royal Bhutan Airlines) and Bhutan Airlines together operate direct flights from Indira Gandhi International Airport to Paro International Airport almost every day of the week, with a flight time of approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. That puts you on the ground in the Himalayas before lunch, walking into a country where the government measures national success by Gross National Happiness rather than economic output, where forests cover more than 70 percent of the land, and where every building, from a farmhouse to a government office, must follow traditional Bhutanese architecture by law.

This Bhutan tour package from Delhi by Memorable India is structured as a 7-day itinerary covering western Bhutan’s four most significant destinations: Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, and Wangduephodrang. The route gives you enough time at each stop for proper engagement with the temples, dzongs, valleys, and local culture rather than rushing through a checklist. You begin with the dramatic landing at Paro, one of the world’s most challenging commercial airport approaches, and build toward the hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery on Day 6, arguably the defining experience of any Bhutan visit.

Memorable India manages the full logistics for this Bhutan trip from Delhi. That includes flight coordination from Delhi, Entry Permit and Route Permit processing assistance, Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) guidance, hotel accommodation at each destination, all ground transfers by private vehicle within Bhutan, a licensed local Bhutanese guide throughout, and 24/7 travel assistance. The itinerary is customisable based on group size, travel dates, and pace.

For Delhi-based travellers, the proximity is a major advantage. A morning departure from Terminal 3 at IGI Airport puts you in Paro by mid-morning. On the return, you land back in Delhi by late afternoon or early evening. There is no need for connecting flights, overnight layovers, or long road transfers to reach a border crossing. This makes even a 7-day trip remarkably efficient in terms of actual travel time versus time spent in Bhutan.

Bhutan is a country that operates at a deliberately slower pace. It is the only carbon-negative nation in the world. Traffic lights do not exist anywhere, including in the capital. The fortress-monasteries (dzongs) that anchor every district serve simultaneously as government offices, active Buddhist monasteries, and community gathering spaces. And the mountains, rivers, and forests feel less like scenery and more like the organising principle of the entire society. For travellers based in Delhi, this kind of environment is about as sharp a contrast to daily life as you can find within a 2.5-hour flight radius.

Day By Day Itinerary

  • DAY 1

Delhi to Paro by Flight, Transfer to Thimphu (approx. 65 km, 1.5 hours)

Day 1: Delhi to Paro by Flight, Transfer to Thimphu (approx. 65 km, 1.5 hours)

Your Bhutan trip package from Delhi begins with a morning flight from Indira Gandhi International Airport (Terminal 3) to Paro International Airport.  Different airlines operate this route with a flight time of approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. On a clear day, the flight offers views of the Himalayan range, including Mount Everest and Kangchenjunga, before the aircraft descends through the narrow Paro Valley for one of the most scenic landings in commercial aviation.

On arrival at Paro Airport, a Memorable India representative will receive you after immigration and Entry Permit formalities. You will then be transferred by private vehicle to Thimphu, approximately 65 kilometres away. The drive follows the Paro Chu and Wang Chu rivers through forested valleys.

In the evening, visit Tashichho Dzong, the imposing fortress-monastery that houses the Bhutanese government’s secretariat and the throne room of the King. The dzong is open to visitors in the evening after office hours and is particularly striking at dusk when the exterior is lit. Overnight stay at your hotel in Thimphu.

    Thimphu Sightseeing (Full Day)

After breakfast, spend the full day exploring Thimphu. Start at the National Memorial Chorten, a stupa built in 1974 in memory of the third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Elderly Bhutanese perform kora (circumambulation) and spin prayer wheels here throughout the day, making it one of the most quietly absorbing spots in the capital.

Continue to the Buddha Dordenma statue, a massive gilded bronze Shakyamuni Buddha on a hilltop overlooking the Thimphu Valley. The statue contains over 100,000 smaller Buddha statues within it, and the viewpoint offers a panoramic sweep of the capital and the surrounding mountains.

In the afternoon, visit the National Library (home to ancient Buddhist texts and manuscripts) and the School of Arts and Crafts (Zorig Chusum), where students train in the 13 traditional Bhutanese arts, including painting, woodcarving, sculpture, and embroidery. Visit the Takin Preserve, home to Bhutan’s national animal, a large and unusual bovid found only in the eastern Himalayas. If your visit falls on a weekend, explore the handicrafts and farmers’ market where local vendors sell textiles, produce, yak cheese, and traditional goods. Overnight stay in Thimphu.

Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass (approx. 75 km, 2.5 to 3 hours)

Day 3: Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass (approx. 75 km, 2.5 to 3 hours)

After breakfast, drive from Thimphu to Punakha, crossing the Dochula Pass at 3,100 metres. On a clear day, the pass offers a panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayan range, including Gangkar Puensum (7,570 metres), the highest unclimbed mountain in the world. The pass is marked by 108 memorial chortens (stupas) and the Druk Wangyel Lhakhang temple.

The descent from Dochula into the Punakha Valley transitions sharply from alpine conditions to subtropical vegetation, with a noticeable temperature difference. On arrival, visit the Punakha Dzong at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. This is the most visually striking dzong in Bhutan, serving as the winter residence of the central monastic body and the historic site of the first King’s coronation.

In the afternoon, walk across rice paddies to Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of the Divine Madman, dedicated to the unconventional 15th-century saint Drukpa Kunley. The temple is a popular pilgrimage site for couples seeking blessings. Overnight stay in Punakha.

Punakha Excursion to Wangduephodrang, Return to Thimphu (approx. 80 km total)

Day 4: Punakha Excursion to Wangduephodrang, Return to Thimphu (approx. 80 km total)

After breakfast, drive to Wangduephodrang. Explore the local market for bamboo and cane products, and observe everyday Bhutanese rural life in this quiet town. The original Wangduephodrang Dzong (1638) is currently under reconstruction following a fire in 2012, but the valley setting above the Puna Tsang Chu river remains one of the most scenic in western Bhutan.

After Wangduephodrang, return to Thimphu. The afternoon is free for personal exploration. Revisit the handicrafts market, explore local cafes, or simply walk along the main street of the capital. Overnight stay in Thimphu.

Thimphu to Paro (approx. 65 km, 1.5 hours), Paro Sightseeing

Day 5: Thimphu to Paro (approx. 65 km, 1.5 hours), Paro Sightseeing

Check out from your Thimphu hotel and drive to Paro. On arrival, visit the Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong), a 15th-century fortress overlooking the Paro Chu river. The dzong remains an active monastery and the administrative headquarters of the Paro district. Cross the traditional covered bridge (Nyamai Zam) for a classic view of the fortress against the hillside.

Visit the National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong), housed in a circular watchtower above the dzong. The museum displays thangka paintings, textiles, stamps, and historical artefacts. In the afternoon, visit the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, a fortress built in 1649 to celebrate a victory over Tibetan invaders. On a clear day, Mount Jhomolhari (7,314 metres) is visible from here.

Spend the evening exploring Paro town at a relaxed pace. Overnight stay in Paro.

Tiger's Nest Monastery Hike (Paro Taktsang)

Day 6: Tiger’s Nest Monastery Hike (Paro Taktsang)

This is the highlight day of the Bhutan tour from Delhi itinerary. After an early breakfast, drive to the trailhead of Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery). The monastery is perched on a sheer cliff face at 3,120 metres, roughly 900 metres above the Paro Valley floor. According to Buddhist tradition, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) flew to this site on the back of a tigress in the 8th century and meditated in a cave here for three years.

The hike takes approximately 2 to 3 hours uphill and 1.5 to 2 hours downhill. The trail passes through the blue pine forest with prayer flags strung between the trees. A cafeteria at the midway point offers tea and refreshments with a direct view of the monastery. The final approach descends to a waterfall and climbs back up to the monastery entrance. Inside, the monastery houses several temple rooms with paintings, statues, and butter lamp offerings.

Horses and ponies are available for hire up to the cafeteria for those who prefer not to walk the full distance. The hike is moderate in difficulty but involves significant altitude gain. Return to your Paro hotel by late afternoon. Overnight stay in Paro.

Frequently Asked Questions

Booking 4 to 6 weeks in advance is recommended for most of the travellers. During peak season (March to May and September to November), seats on Delhi to Paro flights fill quickly. Last-minute availability is only possible during the monsoon and winter months, but fares tend to be higher. Memorable India provides flight coordination as part of the package and can advise on the best booking window based on your preferred travel dates.

You need either a valid Indian Passport with at least 6 months remaining validity or an original Voter Identity Card issued by the Election Commission of India. Two passport-sized photographs are recommended. For children below 18 years without a passport, carry the original Birth Certificate. No visa is required. An entry permit is issued at Paro Airport on arrival, and a route permit for travel beyond Paro and Thimphu is obtained from the Immigration Office in Thimphu. Memorable India processes both permits on your behalf as part of these Bhutan tour packages from Delhi.

Yes, but it adds significant travel time. The road route goes from Delhi to New Jalpaiguri by train (approximately 18 to 20 hours), then by road to Phuentsholing on the India-Bhutan border (approximately 4 to 5 hours), and finally from Phuentsholing to Thimphu (approximately 5 to 6 hours through mountain roads). The total one-way journey takes roughly two full days. For a 7-day itinerary, flying is strongly recommended. However, some travellers prefer to fly into Paro and exit by road through Phuentsholing, combining the scenic mountain drive with the efficiency of a one-way flight. Memorable India can build this hybrid routing into your itinerary on request.

Most of the itinerary involves comfortable vehicle transfers and walking within temple and dzong complexes, which require no special fitness level. The one exception is the Tiger's Nest Monastery hike on Day 6, which involves a 2 to 3 hour uphill walk at altitude. Horses and ponies are available for hire up to the midway cafeteria, which cuts the walking portion roughly in half. Travellers who cannot or prefer not to hike can enjoy the monastery view from the cafeteria. The itinerary is deliberately structured so the hike falls on Day 6, after five days of gradual altitude adjustment. Memorable India can also swap the hike day for a relaxed Paro Valley excursion if needed.

The SDF is INR 1,200 per person per night, paid directly to the Royal Government of Bhutan. It is not included in the Memorable India package and is listed under exclusions. The fee funds Bhutan's free public healthcare system, free education up to university level, and environmental conservation programmes that help maintain the country's status as the world's only carbon-negative nation. Children aged 5 and below are exempted, and children between 6 and 12 receive a 50 percent concession. For a 6-night stay, the total SDF for one adult works out to INR 7,200. Memorable India assists with the SDF payment processing.

Bhutan is significantly cooler than Delhi year-round. In spring and autumn (the peak travel months), daytime temperatures in Thimphu and Paro range from 15°C to 22°C, compared to 30°C or higher in Delhi during the same period. Evenings drop to single digits at higher altitudes, and the Dochula Pass crossing at 3,100 metres is cold even in summer. Pack layered clothing, a warm jacket or fleece, comfortable walking shoes with good grip (essential for the Tiger's Nest hike), a light rain jacket, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Formal clothing is not necessary at any point on the itinerary. If you are visiting during winter (December to February), thermal innerwear and heavy winter jackets are advisable.

Indian mobile networks do not work in Bhutan beyond the border towns. Once you cross into Bhutan, your Indian SIM will lose connectivity. You can purchase a local Bhutanese SIM card (from providers like TashiCell or B-Mobile) at Paro Airport or in Thimphu. These are affordable and provide adequate calling and data coverage in the main towns and along major highways. Wi-Fi is available at most hotels in Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha, though speeds vary. In smaller towns and during the Dochula Pass crossing, connectivity can be intermittent. If staying connected is important for work or family communication, purchasing a local SIM on arrival is the most practical option.
