Day By Day Itinerary
DAY 1
USA Arrival at Chennai (MAA)
Long-haul flights from JFK, EWR, ORD, IAD, LAX and SFO route through Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Frankfurt into Chennai international. Our representative meets you at the arrivals gate with a nameboard, escorts you to the private AC vehicle, and drives you to a heritage hotel in Egmore or Nungambakkam. No sightseeing is scheduled today. Local time runs 10.5 hours ahead of US eastern, so the smart move is a warm shower, a light South Indian dinner, and an early sleep to reset the body clock. Overnight Chennai.

DAY 2
Chennai City Walk
A slow start lets the body settle. After a late breakfast, the guide picks you up for a half-day heritage walk covering Fort St. George, the Government Museum bronze gallery, and San Thome Basilica. Lunch is at a curated Chettinad restaurant chosen for consistent hygiene and Western-palate-friendly spice control. Afternoon is free at Marina Beach or the hotel pool. Evening brings an optional Bharatanatyam performance at Kalakshetra during season, or a Mylapore market walk with the guide. This buffer day is why day three transfers run smoothly. Overnight Chennai.

DAY 3
Chennai to Mahabalipuram to Pondicherry (170 km, 4 hr)
After breakfast, the private vehicle heads south down the East Coast Road. First stop is Mahabalipuram, the UNESCO shore-temple complex with the Five Rathas and Arjuna’s Penance bas-relief. The guide walks you through the Pallava-dynasty stonework, gives you 45 minutes for photography, and steers you to a quiet coastal lunch spot. Onward drive brings you to Pondicherry by mid-afternoon. Check in at a heritage property in the French Quarter, then take a slow orientation walk along rue Romain Rolland, Bharati Park and the Promenade Beach. Overnight Pondicherry.

DAY 4
Pondicherry
A full day in the former French colony. Morning starts with Aurobindo Ashram, followed by the ten-kilometre drive to Auroville and the Matrimandir viewpoint. Lunch at a French-Tamil fusion cafe in the White Town. Afternoon is deliberately free for boutique shopping on rue Suffren, a hammam at the hotel spa, or a nap — the unhurried pacing is what turns this trip restorative rather than punishing. Late afternoon brings a heritage walk covering Notre Dame des Anges, the French Consulate and the old lighthouse. Evening open for Creole dinner or seafood grill. Overnight Pondicherry.

DAY 5
Pondicherry to Chidambaram to Thanjavur (185 km, 5 hr)
Post-breakfast, the drive south crosses the Kaveri delta. Mid-morning stop is at Chidambaram Nataraja temple, one of the five elemental Shiva temples, where the guide explains the dance-of-Shiva iconography. Lunch is at a Kaveri-side restaurant near Kumbakonam. Afternoon check-in at a Thanjavur heritage hotel. Evening visit to the Brihadeeswarar temple, a 1010 CE Chola-era masterpiece and UNESCO site, timed for golden-hour light on the vimana — photography here is exceptional. Dinner at the hotel with a live nadaswaram set during peak season. Overnight Thanjavur.

DAY 6
Thanjavur to Madurai (200 km, 5 hr)
Morning visit to the Thanjavur Royal Palace and the Saraswathi Mahal Library before checkout. The drive south crosses Tiruchirappalli, where a short stop at the Rockfort temple breaks the journey. Lunch at a Chettinad-cuisine restaurant en route. Arrival at Madurai by late afternoon and check-in at a heritage or contemporary property near the temple precinct. Evening brings the trip’s highlight for many: the Meenakshi Amman temple night ritual, when the deity is escorted in a torch-lit procession. Licensed guides explain iconography without rushing. Dinner at the hotel or a rooftop cafe. Overnight Madurai.

DAY 7
Madurai to Thekkady (140 km, 4 hr)
Morning revisit of Meenakshi temple in daylight for the thousand-pillared hall and the temple tank. The drive west climbs into the Cardamom Hills of Kerala, with an en-route stop at a Ramanathapuram spice viewpoint for photographs and cardamom tasting. Arrival at Thekkady by early afternoon and check-in at a plantation-style resort overlooking the Periyar reserve. Afternoon brings a guided walk through a working cardamom, black pepper and vanilla plantation with the estate manager. Evening features a Kalaripayattu demonstration or a Kathakali makeup-to-performance session. Kerala Syrian Christian dinner. Overnight Thekkady.

DAY 8
Thekkady to Alleppey Houseboat (140 km, 4 hr)
An early morning boat safari on Periyar Lake, looking for wild elephant, sambar deer and giant Malabar squirrel. Back to the hotel for breakfast and checkout. The drive west descends through Kottayam into the Kerala backwaters, with lunch at a Kottayam toddy shop for authentic karimeen fry. Boarding of the private houseboat at Alleppey is by 1230. The boat cruises Vembanad Lake and Punnamada, with meals cooked on board by a two-person crew. Sunset from the deck is the trip’s most photographed moment. Moored overnight at a village jetty. Overnight houseboat.

DAY 9
Alleppey to Kochi (75 km, 2 hr)
A slow morning on the houseboat with breakfast on deck as the boat cruises back to the Alleppey mooring, departing by 0930. Drive north to Kochi and check in at a Fort Kochi heritage property near the Chinese fishing nets. Afternoon walk covers the nets, St. Francis Church, Mattancherry Palace and the Paradesi Synagogue in Jew Town, set to a deliberately slow pace. Late afternoon is free for the antique lanes or a Kashi Art Cafe stop. Evening brings a curated Kathakali performance, from makeup to story. Portuguese-influenced dinner. Overnight Kochi.

DAY 10
Kochi to Munnar (130 km, 4 hr)
Post-breakfast checkout for the climb into the Western Ghats. The road follows the Muvattupuzha river through rubber and pineapple country, then climbs through cardamom estates, with photography stops at Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls. Arrival at Munnar by early afternoon and check-in at a tea-estate bungalow or five-star spa resort. Afternoon covers a guided tour of a working Tata tea estate and the KDHP tea museum, including a tasting of first-flush and dust-grade leaves. Munnar sits at 5,200 feet, so a light jacket is needed after dark. Overnight Munnar.

DAY 11
Munnar to Ooty (280 km, 7 hr)
This is the longest driving day on the route, with an early breakfast and 0730 departure. The road descends briefly, crosses into Tamil Nadu at Bodinayakanur, then climbs the Nilgiris through Coonoor. Lunch at a Coonoor cafe with a tea-estate view. Arrival at Ooty by mid-afternoon and check-in at a colonial-era heritage hotel around Charing Cross. Late afternoon covers the Botanical Gardens followed by an evening walk around Ooty lake. Elevation here is 7,300 feet and the air is thin but crisp. Nilgiri-style continental dinner at the hotel. Overnight Ooty.

DAY 12
Ooty to Mysore (155 km, 5 hr)
Morning brings the highlight for Nilgiri Mountain Railway fans: the Ooty to Coonoor toy-train segment, a UNESCO heritage rack-and-pinion line. The car meets you at Coonoor station and continues down the ghat road through Bandipur tiger reserve, part of the Nilgiri Biosphere. Sightings of chital and elephant are common along this stretch though not guaranteed. Lunch at Gudalur. Arrival at Mysore by mid-afternoon and check-in at a heritage palace hotel or five-star property. Late-evening Amba Vilas palace illumination viewing on Sunday, or a rooftop dinner otherwise. Overnight Mysore.

DAY 13
Mysore to Bangalore, Departure (145 km, 3.5 hr)
Morning visit to Chamundi Hill temple and the Nandi bull statue. Breakfast at the hotel followed by checkout. The drive to Bangalore is on the expressway, arriving by early afternoon. Depending on your international flight timing, we arrange a day-use room near Kempegowda International Airport for a shower, dinner and repack. Assistance at check-in for the long-haul return to JFK, ORD, LAX or IAD is standard, with onward flights typically routing through Doha, Dubai or Frankfurt. Travellers extending the itinerary can add Coorg, Hampi or a Bandipur safari. US-hour helpline access remains active for forty-eight hours post-arrival home.
