Arrive Delhi from Australia, Transfer to Haridwar

Most Australian arrivals land at IGI Terminal 3 in the early morning after the overnight flight from Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane via Singapore or Dubai. Our representative meets you outside the arrival gate with a name placard and chilled water. If preferred, an overnight halt at a Delhi airport hotel is arranged to reset from a 14-hour flight and the four-and-a-half-hour time shift before the mountain drive. The direct road transfer to Haridwar takes about five-and-a-half hours on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. Evening Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri is included where timing permits. Haridwar to Barkot via Mussoorie

An early breakfast starts the ascent into Garhwal. The drive climbs through Dehradun and Mussoorie, giving Australian first-timers their first taste of Himalayan foothill air after the heat of the plains. A tea stop at Kempty Falls breaks the climb. Barkot sits at around 1350 metres and functions as the base for Yamunotri. Check-in by late afternoon at a riverside property, briefing on the next day’s trek, hot dinner and early lights-out. Barkot to Yamunotri and Return

Drive to Janki Chatti, roughly 45 km from Barkot, then the 6 km trek up to Yamunotri shrine. Pony, palki and porter options are pre-arranged for anyone who requests them at booking. At the top, the darshan of Yamuna Devi is followed by cooking rice in a muslin cloth in the Surya Kund hot spring, a ritual specific to this dham. Barkot to Uttarkashi

A shorter driving day of about 100 km takes the group from Barkot to Uttarkashi at 1150 metres, following the Yamuna and Bhagirathi valleys. Along the way, a stop at Prakateshwar Mahadev Cave breaks the drive. Uttarkashi is a well-established Himalayan halt town with the Vishwanath temple at its centre, which the group visits on arrival. Evening is kept free for laundry, light shopping and a call home to Australia where signal permits. This buffer day matters more than it looks: it prevents fatigue stacking before Gangotri and gives couples a quieter evening together.

Uttarkashi to Gangotri and Return

The drive to Gangotri is one of the most scenic stretches of the entire Chardham circuit. About 100 km each way through Harsil valley, past deodar forests and the Bhagirathi’s white-water gorge. Gangotri sits at 3100 metres. The temple opens through the day, and our guide facilitates a Ganga puja on the ghat beside the river. Small groups also add a short walk to Bhagirath Shila. Return to Uttarkashi by evening. High-altitude exposure begins today, so hydration and light dinner are the standing advice from our on-ground team.

Uttarkashi to Guptkashi

The longest transfer day, roughly 220 km, crossing from the Bhagirathi valley into the Mandakini valley via Tehri and Rudraprayag. Drive time can stretch to nine hours with road-widening work near Srinagar Garhwal, so departure is at first light. Guptkashi sits at 1319 metres and is the operational base for Kedarnath. On arrival, the group meets the helicopter liaison if the Kedarnath heli-shuttle has been booked. Guptkashi to Kedarnath

Two options operate today. Trekkers depart for Sonprayag by road, then take the 16 km trail from Gaurikund up to Kedarnath at 3583 metres. Helicopter travellers report to the Sitapur or Guptkashi helipad for the six-to-seven-minute shuttle. Once at Kedarnath, the group checks into GMVN or a nearby tented camp, freshens up and proceeds for evening aarti at the Jyotirlinga. Rudrabhishek puja is arranged the next morning through our temple committee liaison. Overnight at Kedarnath in basic mountain accommodation, altitude-appropriate meals and hot water bottles on request.

Kedarnath to Guptkashi, Continue to Joshimath

Early morning Rudrabhishek and darshan, followed by descent to Sonprayag or the return helicopter shuttle. The group regroups at Guptkashi for a hot lunch and drives on to Joshimath through Chopta and Chamoli, roughly 180 km in total. Joshimath at 1875 metres is the base for Badrinath and holds Adi Shankaracharya’s Jyotirmath. Overnight at Joshimath in a 3-star hotel. This day looks long on paper but the descent from Kedarnath eases the altitude load, which suits Australian retirees on the circuit.

Joshimath to Badrinath and Return

Morning drive of about 45 km to Badrinath at 3133 metres, the final dham of the circuit. The road passes through the narrow gates of Vishnuprayag and Pandukeshwar. At Badrinath, the group takes a dip in the hot Tapt Kund, then proceeds for darshan of Badrinarayan. A guided visit to Mana village, the last Indian village before the Tibet border, includes Vyas Gufa and Bhim Pul. Return to Joshimath by evening or an optional overnight at Badrinath for pilgrims wanting the morning abhishek. This is the emotional close of the yatra for most families.

Joshimath to Rishikesh

A long descent day of about 250 km back through Rudraprayag, Devprayag and Byasi. Photo stops at the Ganga confluences and a lunch break at a highway restaurant break the drive. Rishikesh in the evening offers a welcome contrast: warmer weather, cafes on the Ganga, Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula for a short walk before dinner. Overnight at a boutique property near Tapovan or Swargashram, whichever the group prefers. This soft-landing evening lets Australian travellers reset before the final push back to Delhi.

Rishikesh to Delhi Departure

Morning at leisure for a last Ganga aarti or a short yoga session at one of the Tapovan ashrams. Drive to Delhi after an early lunch, approximately six hours by road. Timed drop at IGI Terminal 3 for the return flight to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth. Late-night departures are the norm on the Australia sector, so a day-use room at a Delhi airport hotel is optional.
