Overview

Set afloat in beautiful seclusion east of the Indian Mainland, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands consist of an Archipelago, made up of 572 astonishing islands, islets and Rocky formations. Andaman and Nicobar Islands, known as the Emerald Islands, are two groups of islands located between the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.

The geography of the islands is mountainous and thrives in evergreen forests. The sandy shores along the winding coastline are lined with coconut palms that gently sway to the beat of the waves. Port Blair is a charming and scenic town and is the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, located off India’s east coast. The Cellular Jail, Samudrika Aquatic Museum, the Zoo, the Forest and Aquariums each have something special to offer.

The wonderful beaches and enchanting oceanic life on the reefs along with opportunities for water sports, bird watching and fishing, make Port Blair one of the most captivating tourist destinations in the country. The records at the site museum and the Death House bring tears to one’s eyes. The islands were once called Kalapani or black water, because the water had the blood of those who dreamt of a free India. On the Port Blair Trip, get ready to be splashed in the sea and for your adventure ahead. The Port Blair Andaman Tour will also connect you with some historical views like The Cellular Jail, Chatham Saw Mill, Ross Island, Anthropological Museum and much more.

Port Blair & Around: History, Beauty, and Everything in Between

Long before tourists came to take beach selfies, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands sat quietly in the Bay of Bengal—formed by ancient volcanic activity and shifting tectonic plates. These islands were full of dense forests, coral reefs, and untouched beaches, home to native tribes who lived in harmony with nature.

The name “Andaman” might have come from “Hanuman,” the monkey god, pronounced “Handuman” in old Malay. Traders from India and Southeast Asia knew about these lands, but most stayed away because of the wild terrain and mysterious tribes.

After the 1857 Revolt, the British decided to use the islands as a place to punish Indian freedom fighters. In 1858, they turned Port Blair into a penal colony, and that’s when the city’s story as a capital began. This led to the creation of the infamous Cellular Jail, also known as Kalapani.

The Cellular Jail is probably the most famous spot here. It is not just a building; it is also a reminder of what our freedom fighters went through. The long, silent corridors and tiny cells feel heavy with history. Don’t miss the Light and Sound Show in the evening; it brings everything to life in such a moving way.

Close by is Ross Island (now called Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island). It used to be the British administrative headquarters. Now, nature has taken over this place, old churches and clubs covered in tree roots. It’s haunting and beautiful.

There’s also Viper Island, where prisoners were sent even before the Cellular Jail existed. It holds its own quiet stories from the past.

North Bay Island is perfect if you love the sea—its coral reefs are stunning. You can take a glass-bottom boat ride or go snorkeling to see marine life up close.

Then there’s the Chatham Saw Mill, one of Asia’s oldest and biggest sawmills. It’s still working today. There’s also a small museum inside that shows tools and photos from the old days.

If you want to learn more about the island’s native communities, visit the Anthropological Museum in Port Blair. It’s small but full of amazing displays about the tribes, their culture, and lifestyle.

For a real taste of the local life, head to Aberdeen Bazaar. It’s buzzing with people and full of street snacks, souvenirs, and colorful chaos. For something more peaceful, try Sagarika Emporium. The handcrafted items, shell jewelry, and tribal-inspired crafts make perfect take-home gifts. You’ll also find cute little stalls nearby with soaps, spices, and coconut shell items.

The ferry rides to Havelock Island. It’s calm, breezy, and gives you beautiful views of the ocean. When you reach, make sure you go to Radhanagar Beach. The white sand and turquoise water make it feel like something out of a dream. It’s been called one of the best beaches in Asia for a reason.

Back near Port Blair, Corbyn’s Cove is a lovely beach to chill at. You can sip coconut water, take a dip, or just sit by the sea and relax after a long day.
