Day By Day Itinerary
DAY 1
Arrival in Delhi from Ireland
The Dublin, Shannon, or Cork departure typically routes through Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, or a European hub such as Frankfurt into Delhi’s Terminal 3. Our airport representative meets you at arrivals with a printed name board and escorts you to a pre-booked hotel near Karol Bagh or Paharganj. The evening is deliberately unstructured: light vegetarian dinner, an early rest, and a briefing binder covering shrine protocol, altitude tips, and Uttarakhand weather forecasts. Currency exchange, SIM activation, or pharmacy stops can be arranged through reception. Because most Irish flights land between 04:00 and 09:00 IST, the day is kept slow for jet lag recovery.

DAY 2
Delhi to Haridwar (5.5 hours, 225 km)
An early breakfast, then the drive north to Haridwar via the Yamuna Expressway and Meerut bypass, with one lunch break near Muzaffarnagar. Check-in at a Ganga-facing hotel by late afternoon. Evening reserved seating at Har Ki Pauri for Ganga Aarti, one of the most photographed rituals on the circuit. Our local coordinator escorts you through the crowd to a reserved bench, hands out floating diya offerings, and shares the significance of the mantras chanted at dusk. Dinner is sattvic vegetarian. First-time Irish visitors often find Har Ki Pauri’s sensory density overwhelming; the coordinator stays until you signal readiness to return.

DAY 3
Haridwar to Barkot (7 hours via Mussoorie)
Early morning departure through the Doon valley, passing Rishikesh, Dehradun, and Mussoorie, which offers a mid-morning tea stop with the first proper Himalayan view. After a lunch break at Kempty Fall, the road climbs to Barkot at 1,220 metres, a small trading town that serves as the Yamunotri base. Check-in at a family-run lodge with mountain-facing rooms. Evening is free; the temperature drop is noticeable, though Irish travellers accustomed to Atlantic damp usually find the dry cold pleasant. The coordinator briefs you on the trek profile, pony and palki options, and departure time for the morning.

DAY 4
Barkot to Yamunotri and back (6-hour excursion)
Pre-dawn drive to Janki Chatti, then the 5 km climb to Yamunotri at 3,293 metres. Options: walk with a guide, hire a pony, or take a palki carried by four porters, all pre-arranged. The climb takes 2 to 3 hours depending on pace. At the temple, our shrine guide walks you through the sequence: dip in Surya Kund’s thermal spring, prasad preparation in the same spring, then darshan of Goddess Yamuna. Return descent by early afternoon, packed vegetarian lunch en route. Back at Barkot by evening. First shrine complete. This day is often the deciding fitness test for the yatra.

DAY 5
Barkot to Uttarkashi (4 hours)
A shorter drive day. The route follows the Yamuna river valley then crosses over to the Bhagirathi river valley, one of the more scenic transitions of the whole yatra. Arrive Uttarkashi, 1,158 metres, by afternoon. Check-in at a river-facing hotel. Optional afternoon visit to Vishwanath Temple and Shakti Temple, both walkable from most hotels. Uttarkashi is a good rewind day between the Yamunotri climb and Gangotri visit. Irish pilgrims travelling with parents often use it for a slow riverside walk and a laundry drop; the coordinator arranges both. Sattvic dinner at the hotel.

DAY 6
Uttarkashi to Gangotri and back (8-hour excursion)
The 100 km drive to Gangotri climbs to 3,100 metres and takes about 3.5 hours each way through Bhatwari and Harsil. Views open up dramatically past Gangnani hot springs, a common photo stop. At Gangotri temple, the shrine guide leads you through the darshan sequence and the Bhagirathi ghat rituals, including the traditional water collection for family members back in Ireland. Time permitting, walk to the Bhagirathi source viewpoint, a 15-minute path. Packed vegetarian lunch en route. Two shrines complete. The coordinator provides sealed copper vessels for the water collected.

DAY 7
Uttarkashi to Guptkashi (10 hours)
The longest drive day of the yatra, roughly 220 km through Ghansali and Tehri Dam. Two proper meal stops and multiple rest breaks are built in. The route hugs the Bhagirathi and then the Mandakini river, with the Tehri reservoir providing a mid-morning viewpoint. Arrive Guptkashi at 1,320 metres by late evening. Check-in at a hotel with mountain-facing rooms; Kedarnath peak is visible on clear evenings. The coordinator confirms next-day heli slots, briefs on the 2 kg baggage cap, and stores your main luggage at the hotel. Light early dinner; the heli day starts before sunrise.

DAY 8
Guptkashi to Kedarnath (helicopter or trek)
Pre-dawn transfer to Sitapur helipad, a 20-minute drive from Guptkashi. Helicopter flight to Kedarnath takes 7 minutes and drops you at 3,583 metres. Our on-ground assistant meets you at the helipad, walks you 500 metres to the temple, and manages the priority darshan queue. After darshan, time is set aside for a slow return walk past Bhairavnath temple, weather permitting. Trekkers taking the 16 km Gaurikund route depart earlier and reach by evening. Heli pilgrims return to Guptkashi the same evening; trek pilgrims stay overnight in a Kedarnath basic lodge.

DAY 9
Kedarnath to Guptkashi (rest or trek return)
Helicopter pilgrims: a full rest day at Guptkashi, laundry, unhurried meals, and an optional afternoon drive to Triyuginarayan temple where Shiva and Parvati are believed to have wed. Trekkers: descent from Kedarnath to Gaurikund on foot, then transfer to Guptkashi by road. The coordinator adjusts the schedule based on your body’s recovery signal. This is the point where Irish pilgrims travelling with elderly parents often report the trip has already exceeded expectations; the coordinator uses this evening to reconfirm Badrinath arrangements and Rishikesh return preferences.

DAY 10
Guptkashi to Badrinath (8 hours)
The road to Badrinath crosses Chopta, Gopeshwar, and Joshimath, gaining altitude gradually. Chopta offers a possible rhododendron-forest lunch stop in season. Joshimath is a mandatory registration checkpoint for Badrinath entry; the coordinator handles paperwork. Reach Badrinath at 3,133 metres by evening. Check-in at a hotel within walking distance of the temple. Evening reserved slot for Badrinath aarti. The coordinator escorts you to the temple, points out Neelkanth peak behind the shrine, and guides you through the Tapt Kund thermal bath ritual before darshan. All four shrines complete after tomorrow morning’s second darshan.

DAY 11
Badrinath to Rishikesh (10 hours, 300 km)
Morning darshan at Badrinath temple, then an optional 3 km walk or drive to Mana village, the last inhabited settlement before the Tibet border and site of the Saraswati river source. Return to Badrinath for late breakfast, then long descent through Joshimath, Rudraprayag, and Devprayag, where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers meet to form the Ganga. Photo stop at Devprayag confluence. Reach Rishikesh by evening. Check-in at a Ganga-facing hotel in Muni Ki Reti. Evening free, or attend Triveni Ghat Ganga Aarti if energy permits. A gentle close to a physically demanding week.

DAY 12
Haridwar to Rishikesh to Delhi and departure (5.5 hours) Delhi, connect Stockholm
Morning free at Rishikesh for an optional Beatles Ashram walk, Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula visits, or a private yoga session at the hotel. Late morning drive to Delhi, arriving at Terminal 3 for the evening or overnight flight back to Ireland via your booked hub. Airport drop and check-in assistance are provided. A packed vegetarian meal box is handed over for the airport wait. The coordinator remains reachable on WhatsApp until your Dublin, Shannon, or Cork landing confirmation. This closes the loop, with all four shrines visited and the return home leg logistically complete.
