How to Reach Cochin

By Air

The nearest airport is the Cochin International Airport (COK), located in Nedumbassery, which is about 35 kms away from the city. It is connected to major domestic and international destinations. Several airlines operate daily flights to Kochi from major cities in India and abroad, including Air India, Indigo, Vistara, Emirates, and Etihad.

By Rail

There are two main railway stations, namely Ernakulam Town and Ernakulam Junction. The Ernakulam Junction is the largest and busiest. It is well-connected to major Indian cities via express trains like Netravati Express, Kochuveli Garib Rath Express, Kanyakumari Express, Kerala Express, and many more.

By Road

Kochi is well-connected to other cities in Kerala and major cities in South India through national highways.

By Sea

Kochi is a major port on the Arabian Sea and has regular shipping services to other Indian and international destinations. Kochi is the commercial backbone of Kerala state, with its shipping-related industries like the Cochin port and the Vallarpadam Transhipment Terminal. Apart from these, the Cochin Shipyard, the Cochin Refinery, the LNG Terminal, FACT and tourism are some of the other main industries.

Kochi Metro

Kochi Metro connects the city to Cochin International Airport. Even though the metro does not connect directly to the airport, it has feeder buses running towards the airport from the metro station and can transfer passengers near the terminal. Metro expansion work is underway and will shortly connect all the major parts of the city.

St. Francis Church

St. Francis Church is a historic church located in Fort Kochi. It is the oldest European church in India, having been built in 1503 by Portuguese explorers. The church was initially a Roman Catholic church, but later came under Dutch rule. It was then converted into a Protestant church during British colonial rule. It stands as a testament to the early European presence in India, particularly the Portuguese colonial era.

The church exhibits a blend of architectural styles, including Portuguese, Dutch, and Gothic influences. The interior features simple yet elegant decor, with a high-ceilinged nave and stained-glass windows. The church is home to a Dutch cemetery where Dutch soldiers and officials who served in India during the 17th century are buried.

Dutch Palace / Mattancherry Palace

The Dutch Palace, also known as Mattancherry Palace, is a historic palace located in Fort Kochi. It was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese and later gifted to the Raja of Cochin by the Dutch. The palace is a beautiful example of Dutch colonial architecture and houses a collection of murals depicting Hindu mythology and royal portraits.

The palace is famous for its collection of murals, which depict scenes from Hindu mythology, royal portraits, and everyday life. The murals were created by local artists during the 18th century. The Dutch Palace also houses a jewellery museum showcasing traditional Kerala jewellery. The palace was included in the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Jewish Synagogue (Paradesi Synagogue)

The Jewish Synagogue is also called the Paradesi Synagogue in Cochin. It was built in 1568 by Jewish merchants who were known as the “Paradesi Jews.” The synagogue features a unique blend of architectural styles, with elements from Indian, European, and Middle Eastern traditions. The interior is adorned with intricate carvings, frescoes, and stained-glass windows.

The synagogue complex includes a prayer hall, a courtyard, and a community centre. It is a testament to the long history of the Jewish community in India and a reminder of the cultural diversity that has characterised Kerala for centuries.

Chinese Fishing Nets

The Chinese fishing nets are a unique and distinctive feature of Kochi. These ancient fishing techniques were introduced to the region by Chinese traders centuries ago and have since become a symbol of the city’s maritime heritage. These massive fishing nets, suspended from bamboo poles, have been used for centuries to catch fish from the Arabian Sea.

The nets are made of thick, sturdy ropes and are suspended from bamboo poles anchored to the shore. The poles are raised and lowered using a system of pulleys and winches. Fishermen stand on platforms attached to the nets and cast them into the sea. The nets are especially impressive at sunset and are concentrated in Fort Kochi.

Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica

The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica in Fort Cochin is one of the eight Basilicas in India. This heritage edifice of Kerala is also one of the finest and most imposing churches in India. Located close to St. Francis Church, this basilica serves as the cathedral church of the Diocese of Cochin. It was originally built in 1505 by the Portuguese; later, the British demolished the structure, and João Gomes Ferreira commissioned a new building in 1887, which was consecrated in 1905 and became a basilica in 1984.

The basilica has magnificent Indo-European and Gothic architecture and is known for its beautiful stained-glass windows, intricate woodwork, and serene atmosphere.

Kadavumbhagam Synagogue (Cochin Blossoms)

Also known as the Cochin Blossoms, this is one of the lesser-known yet significant Jewish synagogues in Kochi. It reflects the rich cultural tapestry of the region, showcasing the history of the Jewish community in Kerala. The synagogue features beautiful architectural elements, including intricate wooden carvings and traditional décor.

It is located on Market Road, Ernakulam, approximately 15 kms / 45 minutes’ drive from Fort Cochin. The synagogue is accessible either by road or by local/private boats from different places in Cochin. Cochin Blossoms is currently also a fish and plant store looked after by Mr. Elias “Babu” Josephai, who is glad to show visitors around the prayer hall and premises.

The Dhobi Khana

Dhobi Khana is one of the traditional attractions in Cochin. Located near Fort Cochin, it should be included in a full-day city tour. It is run by the Dhobi Khana Welfare Society, which includes 45 active members. The washermen and washerwomen use traditional methods for washing clothes (hand/stone washed and sun-dried). Guests can experience the practice while they are in Cochin. It can be considered a miniature version of Mumbai’s Dhobi Ghat. Guests can donate to Dhobi Khana if they are interested.

Jain Temple at Mattancherry

The Jain Temple at Mattancherry, Kochi, is a beautiful example of Jain architecture and an important site for the Jain community in the region. Dating back to the 16th century, this temple features intricate woodwork, detailed carvings, and a serene atmosphere. The temple is dedicated to the Tirthankaras, particularly Adinatha (Rishabhanatha), and showcases vibrant murals and sculptures that depict various aspects of Jain philosophy and teachings.

Indo-Portuguese Museum

The Indo-Portuguese Museum is a fascinating museum located in Fort Kochi. It showcases the rich cultural exchange between India and Portugal during the colonial era. The museum houses a vast collection of artefacts, paintings, and sculptures that reflect the influence of Portuguese culture on Indian art and architecture. It is housed within the Bishop’s House and was established in 2000 by Dr. Joseph Kureethra, the then Bishop of Kochi.

The collection is divided into five main sections: Altar, Treasure, Procession, Civil Life, and Cathedral. Highlights include a piece of the altar made in teak, a chasuble, and a processional cross made using wood and silver.

Kerala Folklore Museum

Hill Palace Museum

Hill Palace is a captivating blend of history, culture, and architectural beauty nestled in the Thrippunithura neighbourhood of Kochi. Once the official residence and administrative centre of the Cochin Maharaja, this sprawling palace complex now serves as a fascinating archaeological museum. The palace was built by the Maharaja of Cochin in 1865 and today is the largest archaeological museum in Kerala.

The museum contains a large collection of ornaments of the Cochin royal family, paintings, sculptures, weapons, and coins. The main attractions are the horse cart gallery and the weapon gallery. In addition to the archaeological museum, Hill Palace also has a heritage museum showcasing the traditional lifestyle and customs of Kerala.

Athirapally & Vazhachal Waterfalls

Athirappally and Vazhachal are well-renowned waterfalls near Cochin, about 90 kms away and a two-hour drive by road. Athirappally Waterfalls, often referred to as the “Niagara Falls of India,” is a stunning natural wonder located in the Thrissur district. It is one of the largest waterfalls in South India, cascading down from a height of about 80 feet.

The area is home to a variety of wildlife, including elephants, monkeys, and various bird species, including endangered species like the Nilgiri langur and the Malabar pied hornbill. The months from October to May are generally considered the best time to visit, as the weather is pleasant and the waterfalls are at their peak flow.

Kaladi (45 km from Cochin)

Kaladi is a famous Hindu pilgrimage centre 45 km away from Kochi. It is a small town in the Ernakulam district, renowned as the birthplace of the philosopher and theologian Adi Shankara. The centrepiece of Kaladi is the Adi Shankara Temple, dedicated to the philosopher. The temple complex houses the birthplace of Shankara, a shrine where his idol is enshrined, and a ghat for performing rituals. The Adi Shankara University, a renowned educational institution, is also located here.

Bhoothathankettu & Thattekad Bird Sanctuary (70 km from Fort Cochin)

Bhoothathankettu is a picturesque dam located in the Ernakulam district. Built across the Periyar River, it offers stunning views of the surrounding lush greenery and the serene waters of the reservoir. Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is a renowned bird sanctuary located nearby. It is home to a diverse range of avian species, including the Malabar Pied Hornbill, the Crimson-throated Barbet, and the Great Hornbill.

Kodanad (50 km from Cochin)

Located in the high ranges on the southern bank of the Periyar, Kodanad is renowned as the largest centre for training elephants in South India.

Guruvayoor Temple (110 km from Cochin)

Guruvayur Temple is one of the most revered Hindu temples in India, located in Guruvayur. Dedicated to Lord Krishna, the temple is equivalent to Vaikuntha, the heavenly abode of Lord Vishnu. It is a major pilgrimage site, particularly for those who follow the Vaishnava tradition. A unique ritual called Chuttuvilakku takes place every evening.

Special note: Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the temple. Dress code: women should wear only a sari and men should wear only a dhoti.

Punnathoor Kotta (Anakotta – Elephant Stable)

Punnathoor Kotta is the only elephant sanctuary of its kind in Kerala. Once the palace of a local ruler, it was later made to house the elephants belonging to Guruvayoor temple. It is run under the administration of Guruvayoor Devaswom. The compound also has a Nalukettu (a traditional rectangular home with a central courtyard), which belonged to the Punnathoor Raja.

Malayattoor Church (50 km from Cochin)

Malayattoor Church is a prominent Christian pilgrimage centre. It is believed to be one of the earliest churches associated with Saint Thomas the Apostle.

The Malayattoor Church is traditionally associated with Saint Thomas the Apostle, who is believed to have arrived on the Malabar Coast in AD 52; the present parish church on the banks of the Periyar dates back to around AD 900, while the hilltop shrine at Kurishumudi was built in 1893, making it one of the oldest Christian pilgrimage sites in India. In 2004, the Vatican designated Malayattoor as one of the eight International Shrines of Saint Thomas in the world.

Malayattoor is a popular pilgrimage destination for Christians, particularly those who follow the Syro-Malabar tradition. Thousands of pilgrims visit the church during the Easter season. The church’s architecture is a blend of traditional Kerala style and European influences. There is a holy spring on the hilltop above the church, believed to have healing powers. The Malayattoor Perunal (Easter festival) attracts thousands of pilgrims each year.

Kumbalangi Village (20 km from Cochin)

Kumbalangi is a small backwater village in Ernakulam District. It is declared as the first model fisheries and tourism village of India, which has its own tradition and culture. Village activities include coir yarn processing, copra processing, crab farming, Chinese net operation, net making, coconut leaf weaving, country boating and cast-net fishing. Kumbalangi has embraced eco-tourism, promoting sustainable practices and preserving the local environment.

Pallipuram Fort (32 km north-west of Cochin)

Pallipuram Fort is a historic Portuguese fort built in 1503. It is one of the oldest European forts in India. It was captured by the Dutch in 1661 and sold to the state of Travancore in 1789. The fort is situated at the northern extremity of Vypin Island. Nearby, Munambam fishing harbour can also be seen. A Dutch cemetery is located within the fort complex.

Kanjiramattom Mosque (30 km from Cochin)

Kanjiramattom is a prominent Islamic place of worship in a suburb of Kochi. It is believed that the mosque was erected over the mortal remains of a Muslim saint, Sheikh Fariduddin. The mosque features a distinctive architectural style that combines elements of traditional Kerala architecture with Islamic design.

Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple (17 km from Ernakulam)

Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple is one of the most celebrated Hindu shrines of Kerala, dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy (Shakti). It is a major pilgrimage site for devotees, particularly during Navaratri. The annual festival here is celebrated in the month of Kumbha (February–March).

Ernakulathappan Shiva Temple

Ernakulam Shiva Temple is situated in the heart of Ernakulam city and is easily accessible. The annual festival usually falls during January/February and is spread over 8 days. On the seventh day there is Pakalpooram, when the deity is taken out in procession with caparisoned elephants accompanied by Panchavadyam, terminating at Durbar Hall Ground after the famous Pandimelam and evening fireworks.

St. George Church, Edappally (11 km from Cochin)

St. George Forane Church, locally known as Edappally Church, is a Catholic pilgrimage church. It is considered Asia’s largest shrine dedicated to Saint George and is visited by about five million people every year. Built in 594 AD on land donated by the ruler of Edappally, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Kerala. A new church building was constructed in 1080 AD. The church feast is conducted in April–May and attracts thousands of devotees.

Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom, Vallarpadam

A major pilgrimage centre for Christians, the Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom is one of the oldest European churches in India, built by the Portuguese missionaries in 1524 and later rebuilt. Located on Vallarpadam Island in Kochi, it was elevated to the status of a Basilica by Pope Benedict XVI and dedicated as a National Shrine of India. The basilica is a major pilgrimage site, attracting devotees from all over India, especially during the annual feast of Our Lady of Ransom in September.

Kudumbashree is the poverty eradication and women empowerment programme implemented by the State Poverty Eradication Mission (SPEM) of the Government of Kerala. Chendamangalam village is located 22 km north of Cochin (approximately 45 minutes’ drive). Women of Kudumbashree welcome guests with a garland and chutty, followed by tender coconut, an introduction, a Thiruvathira dance performance, a cooking demonstration, and a traditional Sadya lunch on banana leaves. Guests also experience saree and dhoti wearing and visit a handloom factory where the weavers are women.

As evening approaches, the streets of Mattancherry come alive with the sound and smell of gastronomic treats prepared by different communities. Kochi-Muziris Biennale

Cadence: Held biennially. The 6th edition, titled “For The Time Being,” ran from 12 December 2025 to 31 March 2026 across 29 venues in Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Willingdon Island and Ernakulam. The 7th edition is expected in the 2027–28 winter season; dates and curator to be announced by the Kochi Biennale Foundation.

The Kochi-Muziris Biennale is an international contemporary art exhibition that takes place in Kochi, Kerala. It is a celebration of the contemporary art scene across the globe with displays of works by both Indian and international artists across a wide variety of media. It is the largest art exhibition in the country and the biggest contemporary art festival in Asia. The Biennale aims to conserve heritage properties and monuments, uplift traditional forms of art and culture, and evoke the global essence of Kochi’s present metropolis as well as its fabled heritage.
