The Bhangarh Fort in Rajasthan has raked up quite an infamous reputation for itself. Located in a remote locale in the Alwar region, this isolated fort is said to be one of the eeriest and most haunted places in India.

There are so many ghostly stories you will hear about this dilapidated fort in Rajasthan, that you will surely want to just visit it just out of curiosity. However, it is said to be so dangerous then the Archaeological Survey of India has lawfully forbidden anyone from going inside the Bhangarh Fort once the night falls. So, you can still head over to this Fort for a day trip, but in no condition can you stay here after dark.

The story behind the Bhangarh Fort suggests that there was a tantric named Singhia who fell for the gorgeous princess of Bhangarh called Ratnavati. Singhia knew that the match would not to possible owing to their different class status. Thus, he decided to fall for him using black magic. However, the princess unearthed his trick and sentenced him to death. Singhia was also angry about this that he decided to put a curse on this palace, thus, dimming it forever.

Now, the Bhangarh Fort lies isolated in the middle of nowhere decaying on its own. Locals who live nearby claim that one can hear voices coming out of the Fort at night. They also believe that if anyone dares to visit the Bhangarh Fort at night then they will not make it back.

So, only visit this eerie Fort at your peril, and only in the day time.

2. Kuldhara Village, Rajasthan

Rajasthan does have a great selection of haunted places or forts and eerie towns! It comes as no surprise though, since Rajasthan was once a town of great royal history, and undoubtedly some of those ghosts must be still transiting around.

The Kuldhara village in Rajasthan is situated near Jaisalmer. Initially, the village was inhabited by Paliwal Brahmins. The legend suggests, that this village was once flourishing and filled with a lovely host bustle of daily life. Once a minister of the state fell in love with a girl from this very village was determined to marry her.

He even said that he would increase the taxes exponentially if the girl is not married off to him. This led to a mass disappearance of the people in the village, along with people from 83 other villages located nearby. Overnight the villagers vanished and no trace of their whereabouts were found. It is believed that the chief of the Kuldhara district cursed the villages before abandoning their homes.

3. Dow Hill, Kurseong, West Bengal

This extremely spooky hill station is located in West Bengal. The Dow Hill is reminiscent of every horror movie that takes place in isolated hill stations, surrounded by tall trees wailed by the fog, and a chilly spell in the wind. If you visit the Dow Hill, you will feel as if you have walked into a horror film, and the end is near.

The ghosts are said to reside in The Victoria Boys School and the Dowhill Girls’ boarding school. Many people have claimed that they can distinctly hear footsteps coming from the school, even when the school is closed for vacations. There have also been countless murders and bodies that have been found abandoned in the forests surrounding the schools. The locals are always paranoid about their fate, and thus, spend their days in worry and anxiety.

One of the most popular visited tourist place here is called the death road. It is essentially a single stretch of road where a headless boy roams around. Several people- locals and tourists alike have seen this boy following them around. The headless boy first walks down the road and then vanishes into the forest. The locals say that anybody who has seen this boy even once is now doomed for life. They would be haunted by him even in their dreams. Many people have also committed suicide since they couldn’t handle the feeling of being followed everywhere. For several centuries, local and migratory birds that come here plunge to the ground all of a sudden, on the moonless night of September and October. This only happens in a very specific area, and it is truly puzzling. No one, from researchers to scientists have been able to decode this phenomenon.
